Amniotic Fluid Glucose

Clinical Significance: The test is intended for detecting glucose levels in amniotic fluid. A low amniotic fluid glucose level is an indicator for predicting a positive amniotic fluid culture result or development of clinical infection. The definitive diagnosis of intraamniotic infection requires amniocentesis and the demonstration of microorganisms within amniotic fluid by appropriate culture or 16S ribosomal DNA by PCR.
Methodology: Glucose oxidase-peroxidase reaction
Test Code: AFGLU400
Preferred Specimen: 0.5 mL of Amniotic Fluid
Minimum Volume: 0.1 mL of Amniotic Fluid
Transport Container: Sterile chemistry transport tube provided by ProteoGenix
Transport Temperature: Room temperature (15°C-30°C) if collection and transport time within 24 hours
Frozen (-20°C) if collection and transport time exceeds 24 hours
Specimen Stability: Room temperature (15°C-30°C): 24 hours
Refrigerated (2°C-8°C): 2 weeks
Frozen (-20°C): 2 weeks
Limitations: Uric acid, glutathione, bilirubin and ascorbic acid may interfere causing a decrease in glucose values. Sample can be frozen and thawed no more than two (2) times.
