company overview
Today, two of the three most costly
conditions treated in hospitals relate to pregnancy. These conditions
are associated with significant medical consequences that can have
life-long impact. ProteoGenix is the first and only company solely
committed to developing minimally invasive diagnostics that address
unmet medical needs and improve pregnancy and neonatal management and
outcomes.
By applying innovative proteomic and molecular technologies, ProteoGenix
has quickly become a leader in developing powerful diagnostic tools that
have the potential to dramatically change the future of pregnancy and
neonatal management.
In 2002, four leading researchers in the area of perinatology and
neonatology joined together to create ProteoGenix, a company dedicated
to solving the mysteries of preterm birth and the significant medical,
emotional and economic consequences that prematurity has on our society.
Their passion for improving pregnancy management and the outcomes
associated with preterm birth, along with their clinical expertise and
scientific acumen, led ProteoGenix to achieve a truly significant recent
scientific discovery—identification of The Proteomic Map of Pregnancy.
The physicians and scientists that became ProteoGenix were the first to
identify and characterize a fundamental map of the key biologic fluids
in pregnancy and show how this landscape changes in important
pregnancy-related disorders. This groundbreaking work has received
several significant scientific awards, including “Best Clinical Study”
at the 2007 annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine,
and has been the topic of numerous peer-reviewed publications.
ProteoGenix has also developed the unique capability to utilize
sophisticated nucleic acid-based molecular microbiology techniques such
as quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Pyrosequencing,
specifically optimized for use in key maternal/fetal/neonatal biological
fluids to detect infectious and pathophysiological diseases associated
with pregnancy.
2002 through 2008 were significant years of discovery for ProteoGenix:
ProteoGenix was the first to analyze and map more than 800 proteins in pregnancy using recently developed cutting-edge technology.
Rigorous adaptation of bioinformatics led to creation of ProteoGenix' proprietary OpenSea™ software program that allowed for high-throughput protein identification and mapping.
Finally, this comprehensive approach was applied to all significant biologic fluids of pregnancy: amniotic fluid, umbilical cord blood, cervical-vaginal fluid, and maternal serum—allowing the identification of significant biomarkers associated with common maternal, fetal and neonatal disorders, many of which are difficult to diagnose.
Beginning in 2007, ProteoGenix’ significant
discoveries have been in development to become products that will
address many of the enormous unmet medical needs in pregnancy and
neonatal management. A key milestone in this development is the
evolution of a suite of molecular diagnostic tests for intraamniotic
infection (IAI) and neonatal sepsis specifically optimized to detect the
microbial DNA of pathogens in key maternal/fetal/neonatal biological
fluids.
ProteoGenix’ vision for the future is the application of these
significant biomarkers of pregnancy and nucleic acid-based molecular
diagnostic technologies to develop and commercialize effective,
minimally invasive diagnostics that allow earlier and more accurate
identification and intervention that improves management and outcomes of
preterm birth, intraamniotic infection, neonatal sepsis, and other
significant complications of pregnancy.
